Tauke Whana, who was sentenced in Rotorua District Court today, told a family member in 2015 he was a licensed electrician and could install wiring in a house the relative was building.

He did the complete electrical fit-out and issued a certificate of compliance with a false registration number.

It was later found the work was faulty and potentially dangerous.

The registrar of the Electrical Workers Registration Board, which took the prosecution, said the case was a timely reminder to always use a licensed electrician.

Whana was also ordered to pay legal and court costs.
