Solomon Islands is counting the cost of three days of rioting, looting, burning and destruction of properties as Honiara residents face shortages of food and medicines.

A total of 56 buildings - all housing businesses - have been destroyed.

The Solomon Star says it is estimated that nearly 1,000 people will have lost their jobs.

A preliminary investigation by the Central Bank has found the cost of the rioting to the domestic economy to be about 227 million dollars.

At the same time, prices in the shops have begun to rise.
