A man has been arrested following a fatal shooting in South Auckland last night.
Officers went to Zelda Ave in Ōtara after receiving reports of gunshots about 10pm and found a man injured on the sidewalk.
Members of the public and police tried to help but he died at the scene.
A 35-year-old man, who is believed to be known to the victim, has now been charged with murder.
He is due to appear in the Manukau District Court tomorrow.
Earlier this morning, police armed with automatic rifles were standing guard at the scene.
A cordon of about 100m had been set up and only residents were allowed to enter.
A tent had also been set up on the sidewalk outside one house.
Many residents were just waking up when they saw heavy police presence and heard the news.
One Zelda Ave resident said she heard what she thought were about four or five fireworks before emergency services arrived.
Police said they are yet to identify the victim and are asking anyone with information about the shooting, or who knows the man who has died, is asked to contact the Manukau Police Station.
