The Maori Women's Welfare League has banned three members, including the co-founder of the Destiny Church, from holding positions of power.
A misconduct inquiry has found Hannah Tamaki and two others breached the League's tikanga or customs by setting up branches affiliated to the church.
Mrs Tamaki was bidding to become president of the League, which is a non-sectarian, non-political organisation.
League member Prue Kapua says the executive could have thrown them out of the organisation, but
it was right not to do so because they have done some good work for Maori.
