A man has been shot dead by police after an hours-long standoff at a house in Feilding, Manawatū.

Police were initially called to the property, on Seddon Street, before 1pm on Sunday after reports a gun had been fired at a neighbour's window.

"When police arrived at the address, the man refused to come out of the house and speak to officers," Superintendent Scott Fraser said late on Sunday evening.

"Ongoing voice appeals were made throughout the day to encourage the man to come out of the house."

As a precautionary measure, a police negotiation team and the Armed Offenders Squad were deployed.

"At around 9pm, the man was shot by police after presenting a firearm at officers, and was critically injured," said Fraser.

"Medical assistance was immediately provided however, tragically, the man died after being transported to hospital."

Fraser said police would be at the property overnight, examining the scene.
