Wallace Schimanski, 45, was sentenced in the High Court in Hamilton, having earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The charge was laid after an attack in Miro Street in Taumarunui in May last year which left the victim in a coma for two weeks.

Detective Sergeant Scott Ivimey hopes the jail term will provide some closure to the victim, who he said was still recovering from the extensive and life-altering injuries suffered in the attack.
