Fiji is reviewing laws governing its military forces, to bring legislation up to modern standards.
New Zealand's Defence Force is providing assistance with the project, which was launched in Suva on Sunday.
The director of army legal services, Kitione Tuinaosara, said the review will lead to the formulation of a new Disciplinary Act for Fiji's military.
The lieutenant colonel told the Fiji Sun the act will provide transparency and stronger protection of human rights.
