Flash flooding in Papua New Guinea's Eastern Highlands has left hundreds of people homeless.

The Post Courier reports that flash flooding of the Mapemo river first hit in Goroka district on Monday.

The flooding has destroyed numerous homes and food gardens in the area.

Around 8000 coffee plants have also been destroyed along with poultry and fish pond projects.

No lives were lost in the flooding, but a community leader Mathias Ganino said affected families need help.

He is appealing to the provincial disaster office to tend to those who have lost homes, property and livelihoods.
