The holiday road toll stands at two after a motorcyclist died north of Christchurch this afternoon.
Police said a motorcycle collided with the back of a stationary car waiting to turn near Leithfield just after 1pm.
The female pillion passenger was thrown across the road and was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
She died at the scene, while the rider of the motorcycle was taken to Christchurch Hospital where he is in a critical condition.
Yesterday, a 36-year-old woman died in a crash on State Highway 2 near Te Puke.
She has been named as Sing Yieng Pau, also known locally as Lisa Yieng, and she died after a collision between a logging truck and a car in the Bay of Plenty.
The accident happened on State Highway 2, near Te Puke just after 7.30am.
Extra police officers are out patrolling roads throughout the country this weekend, and enforcing a speed threshold of 4 km/h over the limit.
