United Nations presence set to expand in Pacific

14:06 pm on 2 November 2007

Several United Nations organisations have come together in Samoa to discuss expanding their presence throughout the Pacific.

Representatives from the UN developmental programme, population fund and children's fund are meeting this week to discuss a joint initiative to boost UN support in the Pacific.

Earlier this year fifteen of the UN agencies in the Pacific created a multi-country development assistance framework to help fourteen Pacific countries until 2012.

A UN Assistant Secretary-General Hafiz Pasha, who has been in Apia for the annual Pacific Cluster meeting, says a joint country presence will help the UN's efforts to meet its objectives across Pacific countries.
