Fiji's vice-president will be dumped from office if found guilty of coup-related offences

The chairman of Fiji's Great Council of Chiefs, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, says the vice-president, Ratu Jope Seniloli, will be replaced if he's found guilty of serious coup-related offences.

Ratu Jope is due to appear in court next week charged with sedition and becoming the usurper president after the coup.

Ratu Epeli says he's spoken personally to Ratu Jope to say he believes the vice-president should step down now.

The GCC chairman says as that hasn't happened, they will wait to see what the outcome of the court case is.

"The procedure is the GCC sits and appoints a new office holder....for a serious offence like that, then obviously that is going to happen and the GCC is not going to let someone holding that office, and is convicted, to remain in office."

Ratu Epeli also says that Bau high chief, Adi Litia Cakobau, came to see him today to deny reports that a proposed motion of no confidence had been planned against him.

Adi Cakobau was the high chief who proposed at last week's meeting of the Great Council of Chiefs that those who carried out the coup and the associated mutinies should be forgiven and pardoned.
