American Samoa's Office of Insular Affairs says the company implementing the undersea fiber optic cables has found no significant enviromental impact from the cables installation.
The proposed project would utilize an existing but decommissioned and unused submarine cable called the Pac Rim East, that currently connects, Auckland, New Zealand with Hawaii.
The primary link would connect American Samoa with Hawaii and a spur would also be laid from American Samoa to Samoa.
The proposed landing site would be near the Pago Pago Interntional airport runway.
The American Samoa Government is investing nine million US dollars in the project, which is estimated to cost 22 million US dollars.
The other partners are Telecom New Zealand, Elandia, owners of Blue Sky Communications and Merchant Capital, a US investment company.
