Suspect pleads not guilty over Mt Albert walkway murder

The man charged with the Mt Albert walkway murder of a man last year has pleaded not guilty in the High Court at Auckland.

Tom Coombes, 25, died after being attacked while walking home from a train station in May 2022.

He was found dead in the Roy Clements Treeway.

The man charged with his murder, who has name suppression, appeared in court on Wednesday.

He has been remanded to the Mason Clinic, a secure psychiatric facility in Auckland.

Last June, 700 people gathered at Wainamu, Te Henga (Bethells Beach) to mourn Coombes' death.

The Coombes family said his passion for biking, surfing and photography had seen him develop friendships throughout many communities.
