HMNZS Canterbury is to have its two landing craft replaced.
Design flaws have led to cracking in the landing ramp doors of the craft and difficulties with loading cargo onto them.
Defence Minister Wayne Mapp says the Government has reached a settlement with the Australian-based builder BAE Systems and there will be no cost to taxpayers.
Dr Mapp says other improvements will include stabilising Canterbury and repairing the ship's cranes.
