A woman has been arrested after the Prime Minister's electorate office in Morningside was damaged this morning.

A police spokesperson said an incident was reported about 8.20am when an object was thrown through a window at the New North Road office.

Images published in the media show what appeared to be a sword on the ground outside.

The building was not occupied at the time.

Police said a 57-year-old woman at a Coatesville address had been taken into custody.

They were not seeking anyone else.

Earlier a spokesperson for the prime minister said her office was aware of the incident but waiting on further details.

Jacinda Ardern is currently in Antarctica.
