Up to 18 percent of adults in CNMI have diabetes

As much as 18 percent of adults in the Northern Marianas have diabetes, according to the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation.

The 2016 Non-Communicable Disease and Risk Factor Report also noted that about two-thirds of adults in the US territory are either overweight or obese.

CHCC said being overweight or obese increases the chances of developing either hypertension or diabetes.

Cardiovascular disease and cancer are two of the leading causes of death in the CNMI, the report also noted

Tobacco is also one of the main contributors for all cancers, especially head and neck cancer.
