SkyCity and Govt agree on design deadline

16:28 pm on 30 April 2015

The Government and SkyCity have agreed to settle on a revised design for the Auckland Convention Centre by the end of next month.

SkyCity is to build the Convention Centre in return for more pokie machines and other gambling concessions.

Its plans had to be revised because the initial cost estimate of $400 million went up by $130 million.

The two parties then agreed the original design would be revised, as long as the centre is no more than 10 percent smaller, and with no contribution from the taxpayer.

Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce said there were some matters that needed to be resolved before the design was submitted for approval, but agreement will be reached before the end of May.
