A visiting official from the World Health Organisation says the Northern Marianas government should be doing more to address an epidemic of non-communicable diseases in the territory.
Dr Cherian Varghese says NCDs such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and lung diseases are a major problem for the Pacific Island Nations and governments have a responsibility to help people live healthily.
In a speech to the CNMI legislature, Dr Varghese says things such as tobacco taxes and making water less expensive than sugary drinks can help curb NCD rates.
He suggested that the CNMI government start subsidising fruits and vegetables while raising tax on unhealthy products.
