British parliamentarians' Fiji visit for transit and tourism only

17:51 pm on 11 August 2009

A group of eight British parliamentarians is to visit Fiji this month but will have no official meetings with the interim regime.

The visit to the region is being arranged by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and will take the group to Kiribati, Tuvalu, Tonga and Vanuatu.

The British High Commission says the Fiji visit is for transit and tourism only.

The military closed Fiji's parliament in 2006 but says it will allow for the election of a new legislature in five years.
