Kiribati says it expects its national carrier to begin a regular air service between Tarawa and Majuro in the Marshall Islands before the end of the year.
The tourism minister Willie Tokataake said work is being done to comply with the regulatory documentation.
Mr Tokaatake said it's complicated by the fact Kiribati uses New Zealand aviation regulations, while the Marshall Islands uses United States regulations.
Nauru Airlines already flies between the Marshall Islands and Kiribati, but our correspondent in Majuro Giff Johnson said there is demand for more seats.
"There are a lot of family connections between Majuro and Tarawa and people do like to go back and forth," Giff Johnson said.
