Speedway New Zealand says it will be fully investigating how a photographer came to be hit by a stockcar during an event in Auckland last night.
The man, in his 50s, was taken to Auckland Hospital with critical injuries, including broken legs, after being struck by the car at the Waikaraka Family Speedway in Onehunga.
He remains in a critical condition.
Speedway New Zealand President David Jones said steps were taken at such events to minimise risk to competitors, staff and the public.
He said the organisation would make no further comment until its investigation was completed.
The Serious Crash Unit and Worksafe are also investigating.
According to the park's website last night's event was part of the Superstock Championships.
