Council considering speed change to Golden Mile

16:26 pm on 26 September 2012

The Wellington City Council is considering reducing the speed limit in the city's busiest area, known as the Golden Mile.

The council has received a proposal recommending reducing the speed limit from 30km/h to 20km/h on the strip of road which runs from Lambton Quay, along Willis Street to the end of Manners Street.

Since 2007, when the speed limit was reduced to 30km/h, there have been 54 serious road injuries and three deaths.

The council ordered a review last year.

Councillor Andy Foster says lowering the speed limit to 20km/h will not guarantee against fatal accidents but would lower the chances of people being badly injured if they are hit.

The council is calling for public submissions on the proposal.
