The Peace Monitoring Council in Solomon Islands says 43 weapons and more than four hundred tubes of explosive have now been handed in under its gun amnesty.

The campaign was launched in late April and the amnesty period for the return of stolen weapons and property will expire at the end of May.

The firearms handed into the International Peace Monitoring Team include high powered weapons, a number of rifles and home made firearms along with a quantity of ammunition.

The Chairman of the Peace Monitoring Council. Paul Tovua, said the latest surrenders were good news for the Solomons and he urged those still holding weapons to hand them in now rather than wait for the deadline.

The International team is currently holding 1,315 weapons in secure storage containers
