An Auckland teacher has been sentenced to eight years and nine months in prison after admitting indecent acts with a pupil.

The High Court in Auckland has heard that for three years Nicholas Baldwin, 62, manipulated the then 10-year old boy into performing various sexual acts.

In sentencing, Justice Venning told Baldwin that he knew the young boy came from a troubled background and abused his position of trust as a teacher in continuing to forge a relationship with the boy outside the classroom.

Justice Venning told Baldwin he had thrown away a teaching career spanning more than 40 years.
