One person died in the crash on State Highway 5 at Hamurana shortly before 9.30pm.

At the time police said one person died and three others had serious injuries.
The Christmas holiday road toll now stands at five, with earlier deaths on the roads in Hawke's Bay, Hanmer Springs, Auckland and Maungatapere yesterday and Saturday.
