The head of Nauru's national carrier, Our Airline, says combining routes and markets is the way forward for regional airlines.

An interlining agreement between Our Airline and Air Kiribati has enabled Our Airline to re-launch its Tarawa to Nadi service.

The inaugural flight under the new arrangement, linking Brisbane with Honiara, Nauru, Tarawa and Nadi return, was flown last weekend.

Our Airlines chief executive, Karam Chand, says combining three countries' markets keep the route viable.

"The markets are quite small in the Pacific and it's very difficult for one airline to operate non-stop flights to a variety of destinations. So what we have done here, we've not only combined two markets into one, but also entered into a corporate arrangement with Air Kiribati, where they are able to fly the Tarawa-Nadi sector. We bring the traffic from Nauru, and combining that it works for all the parties."

Karam Chand says the connecting Nauru to Fiji was important for the country as a whole, as Fiji is a regional hub.
