ADB highlights Fiji land issue

The Asian Development Bank has highlighted land problems in Fiji, saying it's hindering economic development.

In a report, the ADB's Pacific Office says there are delays in leasing approvals which discourage foreign investors.

It says there's no mechanism to allow indigenous Fijians to use their traditionally owned land as collateral to obtain finance.

As well, the Agricultural Landlords and Tenants Act reduces incentives to lease land for agriculture, thus reducing investment in that sector.
