New Zealanders have been recognised internationally as the second most generous country in the world for charitable donations.

The survey by the Charities Aid Foundation placed New Zealand second behind the United States, just ahead of Canada and well ahead of Britain.

New Zealanders donated just under .79 percent of gross domestic product.

Voluntary Sector Minister Jo Goodhew said the report also found a correlation between donating and other philanthropic activities, such as volunteering and helping strangers.

Every year, New Zealanders contribute about 270 million hours to the community.
