Police say they are following positive lines of inquiry in a homicide investigation in the Wellington suburb of Miramar.
A woman in her 60s was found dead in her home by a friend concerned for her safety, about 2pm on Monday, 16 October, police said.
Officers were called to the home on Totara Road and launched a homicide investigation.
Police said they were not in a position to release the woman's name.
A police tent has been erected in front of the property and investigation staff are coming and going from the building.
Police said the scene examination was expected to continue for the next couple of days.
Locals said they were shocked at the events unfolding in the usually quiet street.
RNZ understands the victim was a local piano teacher.
An aquaintance said the owner of the house was a woman in her 60s, with three adult sons and a mother in her 80s. Her husband died a few years ago.
She had also coached a Wellington city community netball club, according to the Netball Wellington Centre.
In a statement, Detective Senior Sergeant Tim Leitch said police did not believe there to be any risk to the wider community.
Leitch said police would like to hear from anyone in the area who may have seen or heard anything suspicious or concerning between early Friday early Sunday morning.
