A soldier who died at Linton Military Camp on Friday has been named by police.

Private Alexander Stuart Rope, 23, from Whanganui, was found dead after an incident lasting almost five hours in the housing area of the camp.

The Armed Offenders Squad was called after a single shot was reported at 9.30am on Friday.

The house was entered at about 2pm and the body was inside.

Police did not say what type of weapon was involved. Defence said on Saturday that it would be highly unlikely that is was a military firearm,

The death has been referred to the coroner.

The Defence Force says Private Rope enlisted in the army in 2008. He was posted to Linton Military Camp in April 2009 and had not been not deployed overseas during his time with the army.

Defence Force spokesperson Major John Gordon says they have been providing support for Private Rope's family and will extend that to the wider Linton community.

He says many people are distressed by the tragedy and will be grieving.

Major Gordon says the Defence Force will complete its investigation into the incident as quickly as it can.
