A father and son are in Tauranga Hospital with serious injuries after falling one hundred metres off a cliff while walking to the Omanawa Falls with a family group this afternoon.
It is understood the father, a 38-year-old Tauranga man, fell when going to the aid of his 12-year-old son who had fallen first.
The father is in a serious condition after sustaining back and shoulder injuries from the fall while the the son is in a stable condition with serious head injuries.
Both had to be winched to safety by the Trustpower Rescue helicopter.
Police said the rescue was hampered by difficult terrain that blocked cellphone reception.
