Companies fined over death of worker at Britomart site

20:52 pm on 14 December 2010

Two companies have been fined just over $60,000 for their part in the death of a worker on a building site in Auckland.

The man fell 10 metres at the Britomart East Building in November last year.

The Department of Labour prosecuted Hawkins Construction Limited and Firepel Keppell Limited.

The Auckland District Court on Tuesday fined Hawkins Construction $36,000 and Firepel Keppell $25,000.

The companies were working on the 12-storey building and failed to identify a hole the worker fell through as a hazard.

The department says it should have been covered with secured planks or restricted by guard rails.
