A search and rescue operation for a boy swept away by a wave at 90 Mile Beach has been called off for the night.
The 16-year-old was swimming with about seven other people when he was hit by a wave, and disappeared from sight.
Members of the public alerted the police about 5pm today.
A search and rescue operation was started involving the police, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, and members of the local surf club.
They have been searching both the sea and the shoreline for any sign of him.
