PNG Media President says the media is already independently regulated

15:24 pm on 9 July 2003

The Papua New Guinea media council president Peter Aitsi is rejecting calls by politicians for stricter legislation to control the media.

He says calls by Gulf Governor Chris Haiveta for the judiciary to regulate the media are unnecessary.

Mr Aitsi says an independent standards committee, the ISC, is already in place and if the public feel the media is misreporting, the option to go through the courts is always there.

"Some members of Parliament see the work of the media in PNG as a potential threat to them so these statements are made, but we hope they will see the ability of the PNG media to carry out its work independently and support it in the long run"

Peter Aitsi says the five ISC members are not from the media so they're independent by being representative of the community.

Mr Aitsi says the media in PNG has a primary responsibility to the community whereas parliamentarians see the media as a threat and this is why they want to control it.
