Last night, a crash in North Canterbury at about 7pm left one person dead.

Also yesterday a motorcycle pillion passenger died when the motorcycle ran into the back of a stationary car. The female passenger died at the scene while the rider of the motorcycle was taken to Christchurch Hospital in critical condition.

On Saturday, a 36-year-old woman died after a collision between a logging truck and a car on State Highway 2 near Te Puke, Bay of Plenty.

Extra police officers are out patrolling roads throughout the country this weekend, and enforcing a speed threshold of 4 km/h over the limit.

Five people died on the roads over the Queen's Birthday weekend last year.
