Last month, a 34-year-old woman was charged with careless driving after five people were hit and badly injured by a car in the Manukau Westfield.

Six people were taken to Middlemore Hospital with various injuries after the crash on 20 March.

The woman was arrested at the scene charged with careless driving causing injury and has since appeared in the Manukau District Court. At the time, Police said further charges were likely.

In a statement, Detective Senior Sergeant Kevin Tiernan confirmed 59-year-old Manurewa man Gary Cowley died in hospital yesterday after he sustained serious injuries in the crash.

Tiernan said another person who was seriously injured in the incident remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Meanwhile, the other victims have been discharged from hospital.

The alleged driver of the vehicle will now face further charges of reckless driving causing death and driving with excess breath alcohol causing death.

The woman is set to appear in the Manukau District Court on 12 April.
