The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found an officer was justified in shooting a man in Motueka two years ago.

The authority said the officer who shot and injured Ford Hurunui after a pursuit in 2015 believed the man posed an immediate threat of grievous bodily harm or death.
Authority chairman Judge David Carruthers said the officer tried to avoid a lethal outcome by giving Hurinui the opportunity to surrender.
Tasman District Commander Superintendent Mike Johnson said the policeman acted to keep himself and the community safe when a shotgun was pointed at him.
Hurinui was sent to jail for five years and nine months after being convicted of using a firearm against police and intent to injure.
