Papua New Guinea's Ombudsman is investigating the University of PNG, which is facing a management crisis.
The government's decision to replace the university's governing council in January has sparked allegations of political interference from the staff body.
Last week, some lecturers boycotted classes in protest at the move.
In a statement on Thursday, the Ombudsman Commission said it was gravely concerned and would investigate the university's leaders.
It encouraged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
