Heavy traffic is causing trips to popular holiday destinations to take longer than usual today.

Congestion has built up right across the motu.

In Northland, State Highway 10 through Kaeo has been backed up due to a slip and temporary speed limits.

As of about 12pm, Waka Kotahi said people travelling north of Auckland on SH1 from Orewa to Puhoi could expect an hour to be added to their travel time due to congestion.

About midday, Waka Kotahi said several northbound lanes on the south-western State Highway 20A motorway link on-ramp were blocked after an incident, but by 1pm it said that had been cleared.

In the south of the city, southbound traffic was also backed up on SH1, through Takanini.

Traffic heading north of Auckland had eased by 5pm, but remained slow in Wellsford where cars were moving at less than 60km/h on SH1.

Half an hour delays southbound out of Cambridge and on SH29 into Tauranga have remained for much of the day.

In Wellington, traffic is heavy between Paraparaumu and Levin.
