Power company workers trimming trees in Taipa discovered the bones lying in steep scrubland on Monday.

Detective Inspector Rhys Johnston said the remains may have been there for several years.

He said a police team was still working at the scene, but were expected to finish their examination there today.

Mr Johnston said the forensic investigations would take several days, but police were following strong leads on the person's identity.

He has previously said there were a number of missing persons cases on file.
