Police in Manawatū are are seeking sightings of a man north of Shannon after an incident early on Wednesday evening.
A man found with moderate injuries at the Four Square on Plimmer Terrace was taken to Palmerston North just after 6.30pm.
Horowhenua mayor Bernie Wanden told RNZ he understood the man suffered a gunshot wound.
Police are investigating the incident but do not believe the man was injured at a location before arriving at the Four Square.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thompson said police are continuing to speak with a number of witnesses.
"We are also seeking sightings from the public of a man walking along the side of the road about 1km north of Shannon between 5.30-6.30pm yesterday.
"We do not believe there is any particular risk to residents in Shannon, as this appears to have been an isolated incident."
On Thursday morning the injured man was in a stable condition in hospital.
