It comes as New Zealand reaffirms its presence in the territory, with the first Ministerial visit in nearly 15 years this week.

Speaking from Tokelau, Civil Defence Minister Kris Faafoi said the commitment was made earlier this year when Tokelau leaders visited Wellington.

"She's taking the Pacific Reset very seriously," Mr Faafoi said of Jacinda Ardern.

"The responsibility to the realm nations is one that the coalition government is committed to putting its weight behind not just in terms of a new strategy, but I think it's been a long time - it's been I think 2004 since the last Prime Minister visited."
