Parking fees are doubling on some streets in Queenstown, as the council aims to boost its new public transport network, and ease congestion on the roads.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council approved the changes today, which will see parking prices bumped on several streets in the central business district.

Parking in the town could cost up to $40 a day, with prices on some streets doubling to $4 an hour.

The fee rise comes as Queenstown prepares for a new bus service, and the mayor Jim Boult hopes the new parking fees will encourage people to take the bus.

It also comes on top of high house and rental prices in the city, making it hard for the largely tourism-based workforce.
