A man shot by police in the Canterbury town of Kaiapoi has been charged in relation to the incident.
On 25 June, the man allegedly threatened a member of the public with a knife and metal bar before attacking a police car.
Around 20 minutes later he was shot multiple times in the chest, abdomen and limbs after failing to respond to police negotiations, pepper spray and a taser.
Police say the 56-year-old is now in a stable condition.
He has been charged with two counts of assault, threatening to kill, two counts of possessing an offensive weapon, resisting police, being unlawfully in an enclosed area, and intentional damage.
He is remanded in custody until 25 July.
