A shocked neighbour says they had concerns about a man living in the Christchurch house where a person died on Saturday night, and had previously tried to get him help.

Police said emergency services found one person dead and another seriously injured when they were called to an address in Eden Place, Bryndwr, about 6.20pm on Saturday.

The injured person was taken to hospital.

Stuff said they understood police had launched a homicide investigation, and a scene examination was under way to establish what happened.

A neighbour, who did not want to be named, told Stuff the man who was seriously injured was in his 50s and the only tenant of the house.

The neighbour said they did not hear anything when the incident happened, but looked out their window to see the man being put into an ambulance with a "bashed face".

"I got up to close the windows and noticed the first response team. I then saw [the man] on an ambulance bed. His whole face was purple and black."

They did not know a person was dead inside the home until later, they said.

It had been "very upsetting" to see.

"This has made us feel unsafe in our home and also feel very uncomfortable. My son did not sleep well. It's been a very stressful time so far."

The neighbour said they had contacted Kāinga Ora "for months" to get help for the man.

"We had tried to get him help and nothing worked, now we are waking up to this, and it is very sad," they said.

Kāinga Ora has been approached for comment.

Eden Place, a short cul-de-sac, was cordoned off at the intersection with Evatt Street on Saturday night.

Detectives appeared to be focusing their attention on properties at the end of the street, where there were several state houses.

Another nearby resident, who did not want to be named, was shocked to learn someone had died.

The woman had been home all evening, but had not heard anything and did not know what had happened.

Police would often call on homes in the area, she said.

Another resident of the street said they left home shortly before the incident unfolded, but that it had been "all quiet" in the hours before that, with no parties, disturbances or altercations.

Housing New Zealand was the listed owner of the property where the incident was thought to have happened.

Police asked for anyone with information about the incident to call police on 105 and quote event number P053538640.
