A magnitude 5.5 earthquake near Milford Sound shook parts of Otago and the West Coast in the early hours of the morning.
The quake struck 60km north-east of Milford Sound at 3.29am on Tuesday.
More than 1000 people reported feeling the shaking, mostly around Queenstown and Wanaka.
Shaking was light close to the 5km deep quake, GeoNet said.
The quake was also felt in Roxburgh, Dunedin, Mt Mount Cook, and in Haast and other parts of the West Coast, according to reports on GeoNet.
