Four research institutes focusing on earthquake resilience, as well as the future of food and pest management, have won government funding of up to $5 million a year for five years.
The Centres of Research Excellence (Cores) are university institutes with niche research interests and include Lincoln University's Bio-Protection centre, which focuses on pests; Massey University's Riddet Institute, which has a food focus; and Nga Pae o te Maramatanga, a Maori research centre at the University of Auckland.
All have won this form of government funding before.
The University of Canterbury's QuakeCore, which focuses on resilience to earthquakes, won funding for the first time.
The funding kicks in from next year.
