The Courtneys: As part of their venture down under, Vancouver slacker guitar-pop trio The Courtneys (that’s Classic Courtney, Cute Courtney and Crazy Courtney to their fans) play four shows from Friday to Monday across Auckland and Wellington, including a secret show to close out their tour. Support for the gigs come from Street Chant and Surf Friends in Auckland and Desperate Models and Destroy All False Metal in Wellington, and tickets and gig details are available from Under The Radar.
Parquet Courts: Last here to play Laneway in 2014, Brooklyn-based band Parquet Courts are in the country for shows in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin next week. The group, who released two albums last year (Sunbathing Animals and Content Nausea, the second of which came from the two main songwriters, Andrew Savage and Austin Brown, under the moniker Parkay Quarts) will be support by Salad Boys on all dates. Auckland Arts Festival: Kicking off yesterday, the Auckland Arts Festival takes place until March 22 with a mix of theatre, dance, art and music on show. Among those are The Mooncake and The Kumara, Limbo and Blam!, and you can expect to see more coverage of the festival from us here at The Wireless. Mogwai: Five-piece post-rock Scottish act Mogwai is in the country this weekend for shows at Wellington’s St James Cabaret and Auckland’s Powerstation this Friday and Saturday. They released their eighth and latest album Rave Tapes back in January of last year so expect to hear tracks from that and snap up the remaining tickets for $75 via Dash (WGTN) and Event (AK).
Newtown Festival: The highlight of the Newtown Festival is the Street Fair, which is in its 19th year and happening this Sunday. Among the hundreds of stalls, there are 80 performances over 12 stages with a whole lot of notable acts from around the country performing. Later in the evening, there’s also the afterparty at Moon with Disasteradio, West Coast Bullies, Alphabethead and Race Banyon. Tickets are available via UTR.
Anthonie Tonnon: With his new album, Successor, out this Friday, local songwriter Anthonie Tonnon kicks off his 14-date tour of the country tonight at Raglan’s Yot Club. The shows continue over the next few days with dates in Whanganui, Wellington and Palmerston North, and he’ll also be performing on his own later on in the tour before a closing-out show with Heavy and New Gum Sarn in Auckland at the end of the month. Silo Park: This week, Silo Park cinema is celebrating Sea Week 2015 with a screening of the Wes Anderson classic The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. The two-hour movie begins at 9pm in the park, with the markets and bar open from 5pm, and you can head here to see what other films are scheduled for the following weeks.
