Police have arrested a woman they say was driving dangerously on an Auckland motorway, hitting road signs and a building.

They said a stolen car in was spotted in Mount Wellington about 5.30pm on Wednesday and used the Eagle helicopter to track it along the Southern Motorway.

The car was being driven "dangerously and at speed", Auckland City East Area Commander Inspector Jim Wilson said.

"In one instance, Eagle observed the vehicle colliding with a building and road signs."

Later, the car re-entered the Southern Motorway, heading north, and had minor collisions with two vehicles in heavy traffic, he said.

It was stopped by road spikes as it left the motorway on Rosebank Road.

"It's incredibly fortunate that no members of the public suffered any injuries as a result of any of the reckless behaviour we saw unfold last night.

"Our staff from across Auckland worked together to ensure this incident could be brought to a safe conclusion."

A 21-year-old woman was due to appear in the Auckland District Court on Thursday facing charges relating to driving recklessly, driving without a license, failing to stop for police, and vehicle theft.
