Global Covid-19 updates

North Korea's daily fever cases dropped to below 100,000 for the first time, state media said on Saturday, less than three weeks after the country's first acknowledgement of a Covid-19 outbreak. This week they had reported that case numbers were stabilising after measuring about 400,000 a day, about ten days ago.

Health authorities in China's Jilin province, near the border with North Korea, said they are monitoring cases of 'unknown origin' spreading within the community.

On Friday, Shanghai took some gradual steps toward lifting its strict Covid-19 lockdown. Beijing reported 1701 new Covid-19 infections since 22 April.

From 1 June, Japan will double the number of people allowed to enter the country, to 20,000 a day, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said.

Switzerland will destroy more than 620,000 expired doses of Moderna's Covid-19 vaccine, health officials said on Friday, as demand for the shots drops dramatically.
